ICICI Prudential ââ¬Multiple Channel Distribution Essay Example for Free
ICICI Prudential ââ¬âMultiple Channel Distribution Essay In terms of the future of the Indian insurance industry, what do you think are the measures that can be taken/ have been taken by ICICI Pru to further strengthen its distribution system to meet the competition? Bring out the drawbacks of the existing channels and the need to explore new avenues. Distribution Scenario in the Indian insurance Market The major challenges to insurers and intermediaries in highly competitive Indian insurance market are: 1. To build faith about the companyââ¬â¢s insurance services in its customerââ¬â¢s mindà 2.à To develop relationship(in terms of credibility) between intermediaries and clients 3. To develop extensive network for providing best service and stay close to the customers Capturing larger segment ââ¬âRural India Except ICICI Prudential, all the insurance companies have traditionally tied agents that have been the primary channels for insurance distribution in the Indian market. In case of the public sector insurance companies such as LIC, SBI etc. they have used their branches in almost all parts of the country and have attracted local people to become their agents. While ICICI Pru has used multiple channels such as bancassurance, direct marketing and corporate agents for their insurance distribution and have covered 69 cities and towns in India. By the virtue of these multiple distribution channels, ICICI Pru became leader in Indian insurance sector in short span of time with maximum contribution form bancassurance channel. However, these channels were targeted mostly at urban customers while the 70-80% of the Indian population stays in Rural area. ICICI Pru has tried to cater rural customers by joining hands with BASIX, World vision, Dhan, Shepherd, Uttaranchal Co-operative Marketing Federation, nLog Communiaction, ITCââ¬â¢e eachaupal etc. But, to cover the maximum possible rural market and develop strong rural insurance market at optimum cost for ICICI Pru, according to me India Post is the best intermediary option. India Post is one of the oldest infrastructure developed in India and it would be the best channel to reach Indian rural customers at very low cost. The postman are the best friend and information source to the village people. Hence they are the best fellows to create awareness about the companyââ¬â¢s services and to distribute different insurance products. Thus they are the best sales man to build credibility about the company in rural India. Also the postmen have basic education in terms of services, hence the company can train them for their services at a very low cost. Thus the overall cost for reaching rural customer would be lower compare to all other possible options.

The Grand Essay About Reconstruction :: essays research papers
The Civil War was inevitable and regardless of the outcome on the fields of battle, the reconstruction of the nation was equally inevitable because as much as the North and the South had irrevocable differences, it was in the mutual interest of the North, the South and the West to maintain a relationship based on symbiosis. The Civil War and the reconstruction of the nation were bound to happen. There was a great diversity throughout the nation within the three sections. Differences in opinions and rules in slavery, economic and civilization differences are all examples of causes of the Civil War. However, the reconstruction of the nation was necessary, because the three sections needed each other to survive. à à à à à The Civil war was inevitable. Because of the great diversity between the North and the South, the Civil War was bound to happen. Slavery was one of the many causes of the Civil War. It presented a moral issue, since it dealt with human beings and invaded individual freedom and democratic ideals. Slavery greatly distinguished the South from the North, and was the major issue dividing the two sections. The differences in economy also added to the cause of the Civil War. The South had become agricultural, and the North had become industrial. These economic differences led to sectional rivalry on issues such as slavery and the protective tariff. The interpretation of the federal Union differed between the two sections as well. The South insisted that the federal Union was created by the states; therefore, any state had the right to secede. The North thought otherwise; they believed that people created the Union and no state had the right to secede. The South favored, and the North opposed the extension of slavery into the West. Most of the West became tied economically to the North by a network of railroads and trade. Southerners realized that Western lands were not suitable for cotton culture, and realized that they were losing Western support, and the South would remain a minority section in the Union. The North and the South had differences in civilization. A small aristocracy of influential planter families dominated the Southern civilization, compared to the more dynamic and democratic Northern civilization. This difference in civilizations made understanding each otherââ¬â¢s point of view difficult, which added to the causes of the war. Lastly, people in both the North and the South exaggerated differences.

Supply Chains
Question #2-Define the supply chains for the following products from the first source of raw materials to the first customer. A) Big Mac, B) Gasoline, C) Automobile repair, D) A Text book. Supply chain, its management, performance measures and improvement approaches. As an extension of the systems point of view, the system dynamics inherent in the supply chain are illustrated and the coordination in the supply chain is emphasized. Five areas where measurement of supply chain performance should be made are discussed. The five areas are on-time delivery, quality, time (business cycle) total delivered cost and flexibility. The first step in devising an effective supply chain is to consider the nature of demand for the product. For this many aspects are important: Product life cycle, demand predictability, product variety etc. But any product can be broadly classified into as either a Functional Product or an Innovative Product based on their demand patterns. Root cause for ineffectivenes s of any supply chain is the mismatch between the type of product and the type of supply chain. Functional Products are generally staples or those generally bought from the grocery stores or retail outlets. They have stable demands are price variations do not affect the demand drastically. Such products have long life cycles but they invite competition and usually have low profit margins. The supply chain performs two different types of functions: 1) A physical function and 2) A market mediation function. The physical function deals with production for goods, movement of raw materials etc; while the market mediation function ensures that the variety of products reaching the marketplace match those that the consumers want to buy. Each of these functions incurs different costs. The physical costs include costs of production, inventory shortage and transportation while the market mediation costs arise when there is a mismatch between demand and supply. If supply > demand, the product has to be sold at a loss otherwise it results in loss of opportunities and dissatisfied customers. Supply chain management is planning, design and control of the flow of information and materials along the supply chain in order to meet customer requirements in an efficient manner, now and in the future.Demand management is managing the demand for goods or services along the supply chain. Therefore, demand management is complementary to supply chain management and controls the levels of demand on the system. Big-Mac ââ¬â (1) Suppliers of beef, vegetables, bread (2) Factories and distribution centers, (3) The franchises that sell Big Mac, (4) The customers. Raw materials- The raw materials are the ingredients that will go into producing the finished product. For McDonaldââ¬â¢s, these will include the buns, beef patties, paper cups, salad ingredients and packaging. These are delivered to the restaurants between 3 and 5 times a week. The raw materials arrive together on one heavy tru ck with three sections so that each product can be stored at a suitable temperature. The three sections are: frozenâ⬠¢ chilledâ⬠¢ ambient ââ¬â which means foods that can be stored at room temperature. This applies to items such as coffee or sugar sachets. Work-in-progress (WIP) refers to stocks that are in the process of being made into finished product. A Big Mac consists of a bun, two beef patties, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, sauce and a small amount of seasoning. The restaurant will only combine these items just before the customer orders them so the Big Macs are hot and fresh when served. Finished products are goods that are ready for immediate sale to a customer. At any one time, a restaurant will have a range of products ready for sale. Many of these will include finished products like Filet-o-Fish, Big Macs and side salads. At McDonaldââ¬â¢s, all raw materials, work-in-progress and finished products are handled on first In, First out (FIFO) basis. This mea ns raw materials are used in the order they are received. Therefore stock is always fresh because products are sold in the order they are made.If the process First In, Last out (FILO) was used, then the finished product would be dry and unappealing because the first one prepared is the last one sold temperature. Benefits to customers and restaurants ââ¬â The centralized stock management system generates many benefits. Many of these are for restaurants and Restaurant Managers. However, customers also benefit through improved customer experience ââ¬â customers can eat a quality product, in a clean environment, when they want it. Benefits include: 1. Restaurants avoid running out of stock. As a result, customers can always receive what they order. 2.The system eliminates inexperience in the ordering. The system enables a new Restaurant Manager to ensure the order is right first time. 3. Time saved in ordering as the system calculates how much is required. 4. Orders are based on the current stocks. The Restaurant Manager simply inputs the current stock level. 5. Less waste means food costs are reduced. This cost saving is then passed on in better value for money for customers. 6. The amount of stock ordered for promotions is more accurate, being based on past performance. 7. There is a reduction in the need for emergency deliveries, saving money. . Stock levels are always at Optimum level, helping to ensure sales and the freshest product. 9. Stock can be reduced automatically at the end of a promotion, avoiding too much stock. Gasoline ââ¬â Different stages in petroleum supply chain: Exploration > Production > Refining > marketing > Consumer. Exploration: Seismic, geophysical and geological operations. Production: Drilling, reservoir, production and facilities engineering. Refining: is a complex operation and its output is the input to marketing. Marketing: is the retail sale of gasoline, engine oil and other refined products.Oil drilling-Before petrol eum can be used, it is sent to a refinery where it is physically, thermally and chemically separated into fractions and then converted into finished products. About 90% of these products are fuels such as gasoline, aviation fuels, distillate and residual oil, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), coke (not the refreshment) and kerosene. Refineries also produce non-fuel products, including petrochemicals, asphalt, road oil, lubricants, solvents and wax. Petrochemicals (ethylene, propylene, benzene and others) are shipped to chemical plants, where they are used to manufacture chemicals and plastics. There are two major sectors within the oil industry, upstream and downstream. For the purposes of this tutorial we will focus on upstream, which is the process of extracting the oil and refining it. Downstream is the commercial side of the business, such as gas stations or the delivery of oil for heat. Oil Drilling and Services- Oil drilling and services are broken into two major areas: drilling a nd oilfield services. Drilling ââ¬â Drilling companies physically drill and pump oil out of the ground. The drilling industry has always been classified as highly skilled. The people with the skills and expertise to operate drilling equipment are in high demand, which means that for oil company to have these people on staff all the time can cost a lot. For this reason, most drilling companies are simply contractors who are hired by oil and gas producers for a specified period of time. In the drilling industry, there are several different types of rigs, each with a specialized purpose. Some of these include: Land Rigs ââ¬â Drilling depths ranges from 5,000 to 30,000 feet. Submersible Rigs ââ¬â Used for ocean, lake and swamp drilling. The bottom parts of these Rigs are: submerged to the sea's floor and the platform are on top of the water. Jack-ups ââ¬â this type of rig has three legs and a triangular platform which is jacked-up above the highest anticipated waves. Drill Ships ââ¬â These look like tankers/ships, but they travel the oceans in search of oil in extremely deep water. Oilfield Services ââ¬â Oilfield service companies assist the drilling companies in setting up oil and gas wells. In general these companies manufacture, repair and maintain equipment used in oil extraction and transport.More specifically, these services can include: Seismic Testing ââ¬â This involves mapping the geological structure beneath the surface. Transport Services ââ¬â Both land and water rigs need to be moved around at some point in time. Oil Refining ââ¬â The refining business is not quite as fragmented as the drilling and services industry. This sector is dominated by a small handful of large players. In fact, much of the energy industry is ruled by large, integrated oil companies. Integrated refers to the fact that many of these companies look after all factors of production, refining and marketing. For the most part, refining is a slow and s table business. The large amounts of capital investment means that very few companies can afford to enter this business. This handbook will try to focus more on oil equipment and services such as drilling and support services. Oil and gas: Unique supply chain ââ¬â In the oil and gas supply chain, process control has historically included safety solutions, such as fire detectors and high-integrity pressure protection systems, but not physical security, such as intrusion detection, access control, and video surveillance.Nor have these facilities employed considered abnormal situation management or cyber security. All of these elements of safety and security are important; each has unique business and technical challenges. Generally, there are no industry standards or norms for an integrated safety and security solution applied within the oil and gas supply chain. For example, there is no standard for interfacing access control or perimeter intrusion alarms with process control sys tems. Additionally, the systems in many facilities come from separate vendors and different business dynamics often apply.Security technology now applied in industrial sites, for example, originates from commercial building security technology, which may not be suitable for an industrial facility or geographically distributed pipeline. There are also unique internal conditions that present challenges. These conditions include lower staff ratios, unmanned installations, widely dispersed assets, significant use of unsecured public telecommunications infrastructure, exposable products, and low technology maturity. Distribution Planning: Generating operational plans for distribution. These modules are supported by various enablers that facilitate planning activity that include: (1) Supply Chain Database (SCD), (2) Geographical Information System (GIS), (3) Data Interfaces The production and the Supply and Distribution (S&D) structure forms the basis on which the optimized plan for the en tire organization is generated. This corporate plan is communicated to distribution modules and the production planning modules to generate operational plans . The optimized plan for the entire corporation is also used as a basis for feedstock selection runs.GIS can be used to obtain the distances between locations, which are used as a basis for freight calculation. Raw Material Supplies: Process industry has limited choice of suppliers for raw material supplies in petroleum industry are dominated by cartels. It is a sellers market where supply of raw material prices is highly unstable and fluctuating on weekly or even daily basis. Fluctuating prices directly affect the supply chain costs and prices of final product. Automobile repair- suppliers of automobile repair tools and parts: warehouses for the parts, repair shops, customersââ¬â¢ cars.Raw Materials ââ¬â Glass, steel, rubber, plastic, copper, lithium, silicon, aluminum. Some of the raw materials used for cars are: alumi num, steel (body parts), titanium (some exhaust systems) and platinum (inside catalytic converters). It's always best for the translation services provider to be embedded into the manufacturing supply chain in order to be able to apply understand it from inside and accurately interpret the important aspects of the lucrative international auto parts industry and its successful marketing.Hire professional translators that have knowledge across diverse technical fields. These fields include, but are not limited to: mechanical & electrical engineering, automation technology, electronics and microelectronics, navigation systems, board computers, wiring, air conditioning, paneling, service and diagnostics. This would ensure that all the technical terms used in the translation are in accordance to the standards familiar to the local market assembly workers, mechanics, engineers, suppliers and end-customers.Auto parts are built or remanufactured to replace damaged or worn OE parts, while th e accessories are parts sold after the original sale of a vehicle intended to add to the comfort, convenience, performance, safety or customization of that vehicle. The Auto parts are shipped using both truck transports and railroads to move vehicles to dealerships, although air freight may be used if critical parts are needed as soon as possible in order to keep an assembly line moving. Offshore exports and imports are handled by ship.In addition to OE and OES parts, shipments also may include auto parts destined for the various national and regional parts distribution networks serving the aftermarket segments of the world. OES parts, like automobile sales, have traditionally been handled through the franchised independent dealership networks in the major markets of the world. In the United States, the National Automobile Dealers Association some franchised for car and truck dealers also separate franchises, both domestic and international. The independent aftermarket distribution n etworks are much more complex. There are approximately 45,000 companies engaged in the wholesale and retail auto parts. The aftermarket has traditionally consisted of wholesalers who purchase parts and components from the manufacturers; jobbers, intermediaries between wholesale distributors and retail operation; and the retail outlets. They supply for the following areas with an emphasis on hand tools: -Engine repair ââ¬â high quality engine repair, maintenance and tuning supplies. Auto body tools ââ¬â tooling and accessories to get cars into shape. -Air conditioning ââ¬â testing and maintaining a/c systems. -Electrical diagnostic tools ââ¬â testers and diagnostic equipment for car electric systems and components. -Under-car ââ¬â adjustment products to steering, brakes, clutch, etc. other Text book ââ¬â Suppliers of pulp, paper manufacturer, publisher, printing press, bookstores, and customers. A book can be broadly defined as a written document of at least 4 9 text pages that communicates thoughts, ideas, or information.Raw Materials-Books are made from a variety of different coated and uncoated paper stocks that differ in weight and size. In addition, different color inks may be used. Also, while front and back covers are generally made from a heavier stock of paper, they will vary in terms of weight. Pulp logs, wood chips, pulp, and recovered paper are the raw materials used to make these paper products. Pulp logs are wood destined to be made into pulp. To make paper, trees are harvested, debarked, and chipped. For example, hardback books have a durable cardboard stock cover while paperback books are made from a thinner paper stock. Usually, cover stocks are coated with different colors or designs. Since the nineteenth century, book production has entailed the use of sophisticated machinery, including typesetting machines, a web or sheet-fed printing press, and book binding machines. Design-The process of designing a book is ongoing th roughout the stages of production.Initially, the author, in conjunction with an editor and book agent, will consider elements of design that pertain to the scope and purpose of the book, the desired approach to the subject matter, whether illustrations should be used, and other issues such as chapter headings and their placement. In determining those elements, the intended audience for the manuscript will be considered, along with accepted editorial standards. Other design considerations include whether a book should have a preface, a foreword, a glossary to define specific terms, an index to reference key words and concepts, and an appendix of supplementary material.Once the book manuscript is written, editors and authors must refine the manuscript to attain a final edited version prior to production: page size and style ,typeface size and style ,the type and weight of paper for the text and cover ,use of color ,presentation of visuals/illustrations in the text, if needed ,cover ar t/illustrations. The Manufacturing Process -After the book is written and appropriate design elements are agreed upon, book production can begin. The first stage typesetting, pages and mechanical, filming, stripping, blueprints, plate is making and them printing Binding. To help ensure that a quality product is produced; print shops conduct a number of periodic checks. In addition to checking blueprints for accuracy, printers will pull a press proof, or sample, before the print run is begun. If certain areas of the proof are too light or too dark, adjustments to the press may be required. After the book signatures are sewn together, the print shop will spot-check them to make sure they have been folded and sewn correctly. They will also check to see if the book covers are properly bound to prevent the books from deteriorating with use.Because desktop publishing is relatively new, changes and enhancements continue to make the systems more user-friendly. As more people gain access to s uch systems, book publication and publishing in general will see more widespread use of desktop publishing in the future. 16-Explain what is meant by cross-docking, and describe the associated benefits Cross docking is a distribution system where items received at the warehouse are not received into stock, but are prepared for shipment to another location or for retail stores. Cross docking can realize a cost reduction by skipping put away and retrieval steps.Benefits-Many companies have benefitted from using cross docking. Some of the benefits include: -Reduction in labor costs, as the products no longer requires picking and put away in the warehouse. -Reduction in the time from production to the customer, which helps improve customer satisfaction. -Reduction in the need for warehouse space, as there is no requirement to storage the products. Types of Cross Docking -There are a number of cross docking scenarios that are available to the warehouse management. Companies will use the type of cross docking that is applicable to the type of products that they are shipping. Manufacturing Cross Docking ââ¬â This procedure involves the receiving of purchased and inbound products that are required by manufacturing. The warehouse may receive the products and prepare sub-assemblies for the production orders. -Distributor Cross Docking ââ¬â This process consolidates inbound products from different vendors into a mixed product pallet, which is delivered to the customer when the final item is received. For example, computer parts distributors can source their components from various vendors and combine them into one shipment for the customer. Transportation Cross Docking ââ¬â This operation combines shipments from a number of different carriers in the less-than-truckload (LTL) and small package industries to gain economies of scale. -Retail Cross Docking ââ¬â This process involves the receipt of products from multiple vendors and sorting onto outbound trucks for a number of retail stores. This method was used by Wal-Mart in the 1980's. They would procure two types of products, items they sell each day of the year, called staple stock, and large quantities products which is purchased once and sold by the stores and not usually stocked again. This second type of procurement is called direct freight and Wal-Mart minimize any warehouse costs with direct freight by using cross docking and keeping it in the warehouse for as little time as possible. -Opportunistic Cross Docking ââ¬â This can be used in any warehouse, transferring a product directly from the goods receiving dock to the outbound shipping dock to meet a known demand, i. e. a customer sales order. Products Suitable for Cross Docking There are materials that are better suited to cross docking than others. The list below shows a number of types of material that are more suited to cross docking. -Perishable items that require immediate shipment -High quality items that do not requ ire quality inspections during goods receipt -Products that are pre-tagged (bar coded, RFID), pre-ticketed, and ready for sale at the customer -Promotional items and items that are being launched. -Staple retail products with a constant demand or low demand variance -Pre-picked, pre-packaged customer orders from another production plant or warehouse

Does Satire Influence Elections?
In today's political climate, Congressman Anthony Wiener uploading obscene photos onto Twitter to Governor Chris Christie creating traffic jams by closing a main toll area and now, Donald Trump. Malcom Gladwell, an author who currently writes for the New Yorker, indicates in the Satire Paradox that satire should be taken seriously to create change, but then it wouldn't be funny. Gladwell talks about how ineffective satire was for SNL's sketches throughout the 2008 presidential campaign and notes in the Satire Paradox, ââ¬Å"Lord help us if some other, even less qualified and more frightening political figure comes alongâ⬠(Gladwell). Now, Donald Trump is the forty-fifth President of the United States. In 2008, Sarah Palin's lack of experience and communication skills provided SNL with a trove of political satire sketches. The satire of Palin gave a glimpse of what was to come should Senator John McCain and his running mate, Sarah Palin succeeded in contrast. During the presidential campaign of 2016, another work of satire by Saturday Night Live (SNL), created a parody of Donald Trump featuring Alec Baldwin. Alec Baldwin's parody of Donald Trump was accurate. The characterization of Trump as thin skinned and extremely sensitive provided a glimpse of what was to come if he were to be elected as president of the United States. Satire proved effective to showcase the absurdity of Palin as vice president; however, as the political climate changes, satire loses its usefulness as seen in the 2016 presidential election. Palins' inexperience was apparent through Fey's characterization on SNL which was an effective form of satire. Fey had an easy task mimicking Palin. Fey copied the clothes she wore, her hairstyle and wore identical frames for her eyewear. Throughout Fey's mockery, she accurately portrayed Palin as unknowledgeable about America's geography. Fey continued with Palin's inability to be define the Bush Doctrine which is about the various foreign policy principles. It is important that leaders are knowledgeable about the country they chose to lead. This made the audience question if Palin was equipped to take over as president should something befall McCain. Palin did not have any foreign policy experience and America questioned whether Palin understood exactly what a vice president does. In 2008 when SNL parodied Sarah Palin during the presidential campaign, it was entertaining, but it also forced Americans to think of who they chose to represent them. Tina Fey's ââ¬Å"timely impersonationsâ⬠showed how unqualified Palin was suited for vice president (Esralew). It was hard to forget Palin's interviews back in 2008. Her lack of knowledge and ignorance is seared in our memories. Although Palin was Governor of Alaska, she was unable to articulate any other experience that qualified her as vice president of the United States, let alone President. Fey's parody of Palins' inexperience helps show the importance of public opinion on politics. According to Gladwell, a month before the election, Tina describes and mimics ââ¬Å"Sarah Palin's crazy accent, ââ¬Ëit's a little bit of Fargo.' She tried to base it on her friend Paula's Grandma who would say, ââ¬ËOh, this and that and stuff like that'â⬠It lacks specificity because Fey uses terms like ââ¬Å"thisâ⬠and ââ¬Å"stuffâ⬠to show Palin's naivetà © in how she comes across. The focus remained on Palin, even though Senator McCain was the presidential candidate. The impact of Fey's parody of Palin drew more criticism of Palin and as a result, many voters abandoned the GOP and voted for Obama. Sarah Palin's communication skills were lacking, thus, highlighting her inability to prove that she was, indeed, qualified to become the next vice president of the United States. In her interviews, Palin appeared flummoxed in her responses. Palin had participated in two key interviews with ABC and CBS news outlets which allowed the public to see for themselves how uncomfortable and indecisive she appeared. She frequently paused throughout the interview as though she was trying to come up with an acceptable response. On September 11, 2008, Sarah Palin was interviewed by Charles Gibson. Gibson asked Palin, ââ¬Å"What insight into Russian actions, particularly in the last couple of weeks, does the proximity of the state give you?' Palin responds, ââ¬ËThey're our next-door neighbors and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska'â⬠(Gibson). It was apparent that she had not properly prepared for the interview and seemed overwhelmed with the grueling process of the campaign. She was hurting McCain's chance at the presidency. SNL's effective satire continued to put a negative light on Palin. Her interviews were cut back and appearances limited. After the Gibson interview, SNL quickly mocked her words and provided the one line that is still associated with Palin today, ââ¬Å"I can see Russia from my House!â⬠With the ongoing claims that Russia had interfered with the 2016 Presidential Election, Palin responded in a farcical manner and tweeted, ââ¬Å"Russia's getting out of hand? So, says the defeated. Not to worryâ⬠¦ remember I can keep an eye on them from hereâ⬠(Mazza). Gladwell seems to think Tina Fey's mimicry was a failure, but as we knew, ââ¬Å"Sarah Palin was not elected as vice president and has not held any public office since 2009â⬠(Blu). SNL's continued satire of Palin provoked Americans to pay attention. SNL satire was so effective in 2008 that it is still relevant now. The audience has to be receptive for satire to be effective; however, in 2016, during the Trump and Clinton presidential campaign, voters weren't responding to the satire. Some conservatives do not watch SNL because the show has a liberal approach to politics. SNL used to be bi-partisan, now it is mostly liberal, thus, proving that satire was ineffective for Trump's campaign. Throughout the course of the campaign, SNL had abundance of material to work with. The numerous interviews, speeches and remarks made it unbelievably easy for SNL to satirize Trump. He was accurately depicted as the narcissist misogynist that he is. According to Baldwin, ââ¬Å"with Trump, we pretty much just re-created what he does, we maybe just put a bit more chili pepper in there to spice it upâ⬠(McGurk). Baldwin keyed in on Trump's weaknesses and locked in on his sensitivity. Trump is sensitive about how much money he has and how smart he is. ââ¬Å"He constantly mentions that he has gone to the best schools and that he attended Wharton Business Schoolâ⬠(Balz). The SNL skits were hilarious. One sketch involved a campaign ad entitled, Racists for Donald Trump which was in two parts. The first part showed Middle America praising him and the second part showed the same people elaborating their message with white supremacist labels, clothing and writing. America was entertained, but his right-wing conservative support base dug in and continued to rally for Trump. Trump won the presidency because he was the lesser of two evils. To his support base, Trump represents change, but there is a cost to that change. ââ¬Å"People were fully aware of his lack of values, divisiveness, his bigotry and history of abusing people,â⬠but America did not care and it has been at a great cost (Balz). America is ridiculed and no longer the leader of the free world. In 2015, hundreds had protested Donald Trump's appearance on SNL. It was learned that Trump ââ¬Å"vetoed some of the sketches. He did this in order not to anger his support base in Iowaâ⬠who most likely were conservatives (D'Addario). In response to SNL's continued mockery of Trump, he engaged his conservative support base through Twitter, informing them of SNL's bias. Unfortunately, SNL allowed Trump to manipulate the scripted opening, as a result, ââ¬Å"the episode was considered among the most sedative in the history of SNLâ⬠(D'Addario). SNL took control and parodied Trump the remainder of the campaign on their own terms to no avail. Satire was ineffective due to the fact that Trump vetoed some of the opening remarks. As for Trump being thin skinned, he was extremely sensitive about SNL's portrayal of him, so he took the low road and of course, continued to tweet his dislike throughout the campaign. Trump's tweets were key in increasing his support base and this contributed to the failure of satire. As SNL continues to soothe America with Alec Baldwin's parody of Trump, Baldwin continues to be ââ¬Å"liberal America's ââ¬Ëconsoler-in-chief'â⬠(McGurk). Ultimately, the political climate has changed and so, satire has to find a more effective way to engage viewers of all comedic media outlets. Satire can be both effective and ineffective, it depends on the climate. Gladwell believes that satire needs to hit hard and make an impact, he wants it to cause social change, but then it would lose humor. ââ¬Å"Satire Paradox tells us that comedians are truth tellers, they zero in on issues we should not ignoreâ⬠(Gladwell). Free Essays on Thucydides
Thucydides "The absence of romance from my history will, I fear, detract somewhat from its interest; but if it be judged useful by those inquirers who desire an exact knowledge of the past as an aid to the interpretation of the future, which in the course of human things must resemble if it does not reflect it, I shall be content. In fine, I have written my work, not as an essay which is to win the applause of the moment, but as a possession for all time" - Thucydides, The Peloponnesian War [Book I, 22]. Thucydides is considered by some scholars to be the Father of Modern History. Thucydides non-fiction approach to history and his love of exact facts have given him this name. In his book History, Thucydides relates the facts of the Peloponnesian War with as much fact and truth as possible, unlike his contemporaries who used second hand word of mouth and myths to relate their details. For this reason Thucydides is considered one the first true historians. Thucydides was born some where between 470BC and 460BC. How Much House Can You Afford Learn to Calculate a Mortgage
How Much House Can You Afford Learn to Calculate a Mortgage SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips If youââ¬â¢re looking to buy a new home, then youââ¬â¢re likely asking yourself, how much house can I afford? How much mortgage can I afford, and whatââ¬â¢s a reasonable monthly payment to take on? You donââ¬â¢t want to get in over your head, but you also donââ¬â¢t want to live in a shoebox in the middle of nowhere. Where does the balance lie? This guide will help you answer the question, "How much house can I afford?" based both on the numbers and your overall happiness. To begin, let's go over some general guidelines to consider when buying a home. Buying a Home: General Guidelines Thereââ¬â¢s a common misconception around buying a house, and itââ¬â¢s that you should buy the biggest and best house you can afford. However, the house you can buy and the house you should buy are not necessarily the same thing. Some banks will lead you right up to the precipice of spending when they offer you a mortgage. Theyââ¬â¢ll give you a loan that you can just afford to pay, but any big life changes, like getting fired or ill, could push you over the edge into bankruptcy. Not only is taking on the biggest mortgage you can financially risky, but it also may not do much for your overall life satisfaction. When it comes to house size and location, what we think we need and what actually fulfills us don't always match up. Figuring out the answer to "how much house can I afford" isnââ¬â¢t just about facts and figures. It also requires that you get introspective and strive to make the best financial and emotional decision based on your resources and needs. Before exploring issues of personal needs in greater depth, letââ¬â¢s take a look at the hard numbers. What percentage of your income should go toward housing payments? Deciding on a house is a balancing act between your financial and emotional needs. Key Rule of Thumb: Spend No More Than 30% of Your Income To figure out, how much home can I afford, the conventional wisdom tells us to spend up to 30% of our gross income on housing a year, or a little less than one-third. Gross income is what we make before taxes, not our actual take-home pay. We use gross income because the interest you pay on a mortgage is tax deductible. Regardless of whether youââ¬â¢re making $20k a year or $2 million a year, you should stick to this rule of thumb. You donââ¬â¢t want to overcommit to home ownership payments in case of an emergency, like losing your job or a costly injury. So, how can you calculate the house price that would correspond to 30% of your income? It's not just three times your income, because you have to consider total housing costs, which include the mortgage principal, mortgage interest, and general maintenance costs. Consider the example below. Remember the golden rule of real estate: spend no more than 30% of your annual income on housing costs. Estimating House Price: An Example You don't necessarily need a mortgage calculator to answer the question "how much mortgage can I afford?" When figuring out how expensive of a house you can buy, you can estimate that the lump sum house price can go up to roughly five times your total income. Why? The average person gets a 30-year mortgage and pays off 6% of the house price each year. This percentage may vary depending on your exact agreement (typically somewhere between 4% and 8% of the house price), but it's an average that applies to lots of people. This payment refers to total housing costs, which include both the mortgage and other costs. If 6% of the total housing costs equals about 30% of your income (using the 30% rule of thumb discussed above), then the total house price equates to about five times your income. We can represent this using the variable "h" for house price and "i" for income. Hereââ¬â¢s how the math works out: 0.06h = 0.3i Divide both sides by 0.06 h = 5i Letââ¬â¢s say you make about $40,000 per year. Using this guideline, you can estimate that you can afford a house up to $200,000. While you can spend up to approximately five times your income on a house, you could also choose to purchase a less expensive home (then youââ¬â¢ll have more disposable income for golf or spontaneous trips to Paris!). Once you figure out the mortgage, or loan, you need, youââ¬â¢ll apply through a bank. Below are three steps you can take to qualify for your mortgage and reduce your monthly payments. Besides crunching the numbers, how else can you prepare to buy a house? Qualifying for a Mortgage: Steps You Should Take Unless youââ¬â¢re paying for the house with a suitcase full of cash and gold bars, youââ¬â¢ll need to apply for a mortgage. Most mortgages have fixed interest rates somewhere between 2.6% and 3.7%, and people commonly choose a repayment plan that spans 30 years. Once you reach this step, your next questions might be, how much mortgage can I afford and how much can I borrow? Banks look at three main factors when determining your mortgage and repayment plan. The first is how much you pay up front as a down payment. The second is your outstanding debts, and the third is your credit score. These are the three steps you can take to put yourself in the best financial position for getting a mortgage and buying a house. Step #1: Save for a Large Down Payment The more money you can pay on a house up front, the less youââ¬â¢ll have to pay per month. With reduced monthly payments and perhaps a shorter term, you also wonââ¬â¢t have to pay as much on interest in the long run. Aim to pay at least 10% of the total house price as a down payment. Ideally, you can pay 20%. On a $300,000 house, for example, a 20% down payment would be $60,000. Some banks charge an extra monthly payment toward Private Mortgage Insurance (PMI) if you have less than a 20% down payment. Banks want to avoid risk, and a low down payment is one sign of risk. The bigger your down payment, the better contract youââ¬â¢ll get with the lender. The bigger down payment you can put down up front, the better! Step #2: Pay Down Your Debts Another way that banks assess risk is by looking at your outstanding debts. These debts might include student loans, car loans, or other personal loans. The less debt you have, the better deal youââ¬â¢ll get. If you have a huge monthly payment toward student loans, for instance, then you may not appear to be in a good position to put money toward a mortgage. You should also strive to show a history of consistent, on-time payments. If youââ¬â¢ve let your loans go into default, then you may not get approved for a mortgage. If youââ¬â¢re planning on buying a house, then itââ¬â¢s important that you handle your debts responsibly and work toward reducing them. Step #3: Build Up Your Credit Score Finally, your credit score is an important factor when you apply for any kind of loan. Lenders look at your financial behavior in the past as an indication of your financial behavior in the future. The strongest credit scores fall into the upper 700s or 800s. Now that you have a sense of the numbers - paying up to 30% of your income on housing - what else should you think about as you venture down the path toward home ownership? Buying a House: Beyond the Numbers A lot of guides for first time homeowners will urge you to go out and find a house that costs about five times your annual income (or the combined incomes of you and your spouse). While this mortgage calculator estimate may work well for you, assuming no unexpected interruptions in your income, itââ¬â¢s not necessarily the end all and be all in real estate advice. This mindset urges people to step right up to the limits of their financial profile to get the biggest house in the best location that they can. It prompts you to answer, how much house can I afford, with the biggest possible number. Banks and realtors, of course, are motivated to keep people in this maximizing mindset. But is this way of thinking necessarily the best way to approach buying a house? How much mortgage can I get and how much mortgage should I get are two different questions. If you think youââ¬â¢ll be happiest with the biggest or most centrally located house you can get, you may be overestimating the importance of house size and location. Letââ¬â¢s consider both of these factors, amount of space and location, individually. If your realtor shows you places like this, you might remind her that you probably don't need quite this much space for a three-person family. How Big a House Do You Want? People often want to maximize the amount of space they can afford, but they may not be happier with more space in the long run. Humans have a knack for adjusting, which can have many benefits, but also means that we wonââ¬â¢t stay satisfied with material improvements in our surroundings for long. According to UC Riverside psychology professor, Sonja Lyubomirsky, ââ¬Å"Someone who feels elated after upgrading to a big house is likely to soon start yearning for more - an extra bedroom, a pool, whatever it may be. But ultimately, whether we drive a battered truck or a Lexus to work; whether we have hypertension or asthma, our ability to be happy and get happier doesnââ¬â¢t vary much.â⬠As long as we have a certain amount of comfort and our needs our being met, we wonââ¬â¢t get much happier from a bigger house in the long run. People tend to acclimate to the space that they have, and many report higher levels of happiness after minimizing their lifestyles. All too often, extra space just becomes storage for extra stuff. You don't need to donate all your possessions and join the tiny house movement, but you should take time to think back on your various living spaces. Were you substantially happier in larger spaces? What was the smallest space youââ¬â¢ve lived in and felt satisfied? Before falling prey to the McMansion mindset, think about how much space would actually make you happy and how much would be unnecessary excess. Where Should Your House Be Located? While the size of your house may not be as important as you think, its location can have a large effect on your happiness levels for one main reason: your commute to work. Several studies have shown that commute time has a big impact on personal well-being. A study conducted at the University of Waterloo concluded that long commutes link with low overall satisfaction in life, while a 20 study from Sweden connected long commutes with low energy, high stress, and more frequent absences from work due to illness. While you may not be able to afford a location with the best commute, you should avoid buying a house far away from your place of work. Finding the right house becomes a balance, then, among your finances, the size of the house, and the area where itââ¬â¢s located. We all want to live in Danny Tannerââ¬â¢s townhouse from Full House, but with the average cost of a 4-bedroom house in San Francisco going for over $1.7 million, most of us have to let this dream go. How Much House Can I Afford? Final Thoughts There are lots of steps that go into buying a house, and you have to take a close look at your finances and personal needs. Generally speaking, you should spend no more than 30% of your income on housing payments (mortgage plus the other costs of home ownership). You can use this rule of thumb to look at houses that cost five times your annual income or less. While banks might be all too eager to grant you a large mortgage - assuming you can put down a large down payment, are paying down your debts, and have a strong credit score - you shouldnââ¬â¢t necessarily take on the biggest mortgage you can. Taking on any kind of debt is a risk, and you should be cautious about over-committing to a 30-year mortgage if youââ¬â¢re concerned about things in your life, like job security. You should also consider how much of your monthly income you need for spending in other categories, like a retirement savings account or a January vacation to the Caribbean. Think about what will make you happiest, whether itââ¬â¢s a larger space, a short commute, a location close to restaurants and cafes, or a small monthly payment that frees up your income for leisure activities. When purchasing a home, you need to think long-term about both your finances and your overall happiness. Once youââ¬â¢ve figured out what youââ¬â¢re looking for, you can make steps to put yourself in the best position for getting a mortgage and buying your perfect house.

Standard Molar Entropy
Standard Molar Entropy Youll encounter standard molar entropy in general chemistry, physical chemistry, and thermodynamics courses, so its important to understand what entropy is and what it means. Here are the basics regarding standard molar entropy and how to use it to make predictions about a chemical reaction. What Is Standard Molar Entropy? Entropy is a measure of the randomness, chaos, or freedom of movement of particles. The capital letter S is used to denote entropy. However, you wont see calculations for simple entropy because the concept is fairly useless until you put it in a form that can be used to make comparisons to calculate a change of entropy or ÃâS. Entropy values are given as standard molar entropy, which is the entropy of one mole of a substance at standard state conditions. Standard molar entropy is denoted by the symbol Sà ° and usually has the unitsà joules per mole Kelvin (J/molà ·K). Positive and Negative Entropy The Second Law of Thermodynamics states the entropy of isolated system increases, so you might think entropy would always increase and that change in entropy over time would always be a positive value. As it turns out, sometimes entropy of a system decreases. Is this a violation of the Second Law? No, because the law refers to an isolated system. When you calculate an entropy change in a lab setting, you decide on a system, but the environment outside your system is ready to compensate for any changes in entropy you might see. While the universe as a whole (if you consider it a type of isolated system), might experience an overall increase in entropy over time, small pockets of the system can and do experience negative entropy. For example, you can clean your desk, moving from disorder to order. Chemical reactions, too, can move from randomness to order. In general: Sgasà Ssolnà Sliqà Ssolid So a change in state of matter can result in either a positive or negative entropy change. Predicting Entropy In chemistry and physics, youll often be asked to predict whether an action or reaction will result in a positive or negative change in entropy. The change in entropy is the difference between final entropy and initial entropy: ÃâS Sf - Si You can expect a positive ÃâSà or increase in entropy when: solid reactants form a liquid or gaseous productsliquid reactants form gasesmany smaller particles coalesce into larger particles (typically indicated by fewer product moles than reactant moles) A negative ÃâSà or decrease in entropy often occurs when: gaseous or liquid reactants form solid productsgaseous reactants form liquid productslarge molecules dissociate into smaller onesthere are more moles of gas in the products than there are in the reactants Applying Information About Entropy Using the guidelines, sometimes its easy to predict whether the change in entropy for a chemical reaction will be positive or negative. For example, when table salt (sodium chloride) forms from its ions: Na(aq) Cl-(aq) ââ â NaCl(s) The entropy of the solid salt is lower than the entropy of the aqueous ions, so the reaction results in a negativeà ÃâS. Sometimes you can predict whether the change in entropy will be positive or negative by inspection of the chemical equation. For example, in the reaction between carbon monoxide and water to produce carbon dioxide and hydrogen: CO(g) H2O(g) ââ â CO2(g) H2(g) The number of reactant moles is the same as the number of product moles, all of the chemical species are gases, and the molecules appear to be of comparable complexity. In this case, youd need to look up the standard molar entropy values of each of the chemical species and calculate the change in entropy.

Applying Utilitarianism in Business Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Applying Utilitarianism in Business - Essay Example Businesses have to apply this theory as its application is more realistic in ethical situations because the likelihood of doing actions that lead to greatest harm is more than that of greatest good and they lead to serious consequences. Businesses are required to use this policy in determining the most efficient way to release its negative externalities. Despite all the advantages in the application of utilitarianism in business, this theory has criticism that the businesses need to consider to facilitate their efficient application of the theory to maximize utility. Utilitarianism theory has difficulty distinguishing between different types and degrees of happiness. It is, therefore, the business duty to categories the types and degrees of pleasure in their application of this theory of utility. Categorization will solve the ethical dilemma in choosing between short-term happiness and long-term happiness. Businesses need to identify the degree of happiness that is preferable. Utilit arianism concept assumes that the pleasure is neutral between different types of people. Many criticize this assumption since the pleasure of a sadist cannot match that of the altruist. Businesses are required to evaluate the degree of happiness they inflict in the different types of stakeholders they associate within their application of utilitarianism since individuals respond differently to happiness. Businesses are required to consider the interests of the minority in their application of utilitarianism.
Applying Systems Theory to an Educational Setting Assignment
Applying Systems Theory to an Educational Setting - Assignment Example My focus of study is the educational system of Carleton University to which I have experienced studying under its Economics program. From her on, I shall use the word 'school' to denote Carleton University for brevity. The school was founded in 1942 and is located in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It is situated on 62 hectares south of the city centre and is bordered by the Rideau River, the historic Rideau Canal and rather pleasant residential neighborhoods. All the information that I will be using is based from my own knowledge of the school with supplemental information from the school's website. Every university should engage in a planning process that sets not only the direction the institution is going to head but also the pacing that it will take. These plans usually require measurable outcomes for the institution to know what they have achieved and how they have fared so far. The administrative and governing body of the school is categorized into five units whose government and administrative functions are clearly defined. These units, although separate from one another, do communicate and work with another to come up with better policies and regulations regarding the school's functions. These five units and their subcomponents are given in the following: Reporting to the President, the Provost and Vic... b. Office of the President The President, also known as the Vice Chancellor, is actually the chief executive of the school. It is thru his initiative that the directions and immediate priorities are determined. c. Office of the Provost and Vice-President (Academic) Reporting to the President, the Provost and Vice-President (Academic), the chief academic officer of the University, is ultimately responsible for all academic programs and policies. The Provost's portfolio includes all academic units, Graduate Studies, the University Library, enrolment management, student affairs, the Office of the University Registrar, learning technologies and teaching support and faculty recruitment and support. d. Office of the Vice-President (Finance and Administration) The Finance and Administration Division of Carleton University are made up of the Computing and Communication Services, Finance, Human Resources, Institutional Research and Planning, Internal Audit and Advisory Services, Pension Fund Management, Physical Plant, University Safety and University Services departments. Its mission is to provide quality specialized services to the Carleton University community that provides a safe, healthy and productive environment for students, staff and faculty in which to work, study and live. e. Organizational Analysis - Essay Example How ICT has been beneficial and harmful to organizations has been addressed in this essay along with a discussion of how worker community is getting impacted and suggestive measures to improvise upon the use of strategic ICT in organizations. Before proceeding onto describing the positives and negatives of ICT, it is imperative to first understand its meaning. In general parlance, information and communication technologies assist in the processing and management of information and data on large scale. Applying it specifically to business scenarios reveal unique aspects of ICT in the domains of decision making, support systems, office automations, networking and electronic forms of interaction between employees of an organization (Andriessen & Koopman 1996, p.321). Thus, ICT in organizations started as a facilitating and cost saving tool but now has assumed the role of a strategic business partner where competencies and resources are being derived from the use of ICT. In this light, the emergence of Web 2.0 is the biggest achievement of ICT worldwide minimizing distance between boundaries and making the world round. Data converted into digital form can be stored in large amounts on systems and computers which makes storage easy and portable to organizations. Traditionally, information saved in black and white used to get distorted by various means and no evidences were available when needed. By storing data and information in electronic format, anyone can have access to it 24*7 and limitations of distance, time and speed have been done away with by use of ICTs in organizations. This is the prime supporter behind online businesses and bank and other monetary transactions operating in real time. Concepts of video conferencing and other modes of interaction are saving both time and cost for companies. Availability of information 24*7 has made organizations more
Descartes and Dreaming Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Descartes and Dreaming - Essay Example What he was actually hinting at was the fact that although the concept of sensation could be utilized for different ideas, a difference could take place from other points of view on the object in discussion. In other words, states of being that were realized through the experience of sensation could in fact be found to be an actual illusion. Such as with dreaming. An individual might sense that they are awake and lucid but in actuality they are still dreaming, so, according to Descartes there is no factual way to prove when a person is awake and when they are dreaming, all the time. However, Descartes admittedly pointed out that sense perception did hold value for some states of being. For example, if you are clothed and sitting at the table having a meal with your family, this can not be denied because your senses prove this is what you are doing. You can feel the morsels of food pass your lips, and go down as you swallow. In this regard, senses can be found to be a valid way of dis covering the truth (Monarch Notes 1963). Descartes had the renowned ability to make a person question the truth in the most valid of concepts. As with knowledge, he asked how a person could know for a certainty how the intelligence that they possessed could actually hold any truth How do you know for a certainty This can phase back into the idea of being asleep and dreaming and being in a state of wakefulness. Descartes would ask, "How do you really know" (Monarch Notes 1963). Therefore, sense knowledge alone can not be counted upon to fulfill all the requirements needed to prove the truth to a specific state of being, object, or even a persons existence. If this was totally relied upon, one would never fully know when they were awake or asleep because the senses can fool you. The senses form a type of illusion over the mind in a dreaming state, so in this regard a persons rationalization would be clouded and not wholly fact based. Because it is understood that sense impression is independent of free will, a dream state can not be for certain, nor can a wakeful state (Monarch Notes 1963). However, since human beings are rational thinkers, and we can rationalize the idea of wakefulness, humans thus have the ability to be able to discuss the feelings of being awake and interpret the concept. Nevertheless, in a state of sleep, human beings are not aware when they go to sleep and because of that can not logically state when they are asleep, even though they might be (Kumar 2001). For example, the experience of a dream within a dream has taken place with more than one person. In this type of state you feel your awake when you really are still asleep. So, the senses can be very tricky and inaccurate when trying to solve certain questions about life, spirituality, and objects. It appears that Descartes is right in his belief that there truly is no accurate way to state for sure when an individual is really asleep, and when they actually move into wakefulness. Not if a person is looking for definitive proof, anyway. The same is true for dreaming. Though people do dream (as this has been researched), individually a person can not know that they are dreaming because they can't even prove they are asleep. Dreaming and sleeping or not conscious thoughts, and therein lies the reasoning why they can not be proven when they

Avon Calls for Foreign Market Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Avon Calls for Foreign Market - Case Study Example From this paper it is clear that Avon applied product orientation strategy where it produced its goods and went to its customers to check whether they will be interested. Oudan & N.S. U, 2007 observes that this orientation has the advantage of saving the customer the burden to second-guess how a new product would develop. Product orientation allowed Avon to keep producing the items it was good in without having to deal with the risks involved in producing new products. Marketing orientation bears more advantages. In their line of duty, Avon representatives meet people and they get to hear their varying queries, ideas, and needs.à This study outlines thatà Avon depends more on foreign markets because they do not stiff competition. There are many cosmetic manufacturers in the U.S. cosmetic industry. Avonââ¬â¢s independent salespersons help advertise products through the word of mouth. This cuts advertising costs that would accrue from other ways of marketing such as media.à Gr owth in the numbers of women who use cosmetics would raise Avonââ¬â¢s profitability. These are women of ages ranging between young adulthood and middle age. On the other hand, if the elderly exceeded the young, Avonââ¬â¢s profitability will go down. Avon targets women and an unbalanced growth in population that would lead to more men than women would reduce Avonââ¬â¢s sales and profitability. Global recession renders some people unemployed because companies resort to lay-offs and retrenchments in order to cut on their costs.

Host countries therefore undertake to attract foreign investors by introducing tax breaks, specific grants and incentives, investment regulation relaxation and enforcing low interest rates on loans to foreign investors. Foreign Direct Investment in Developing countries, Africa and Sudan Foreign direct investment has in the past few years grown considerably, particularly in developing countriesââ¬â¢ agricultural sector. Foreign investors view developing countries to have exceptional potential of economic growth. Primarily, multinational companies have significantly increa sed foreign investments in developing countries because of the competitive advantage in their investments. Currently, foreign direct investment in developing countries constitutes sixty one percent of total foreign investments. ... In a move to promote foreign investment in agricultural sector, African governments have undertaken structural adjustment and liberalization of policies to sourcing and marketing inputs and outputs of agriculture both locally and internationally. The governments have also introduced export-processing zones in targeting foreign investors in the agricultural sector (Basu, et al, 2002, pg 12). FDI and Development: Review of the literature Forms of International Investment in Developing Countries International investors may enter foreign markets through trade, foreign direct investment, or international licensing of technology and intellectual property such as copyrights and patents. Each of the above forms is characterized by different levels of involvement, managerial requirements, and commitment in a foreign market (Schaffer, Agusti, and Earle, 2008, pg 6). Trade in foreign markets usually has the least political and legal risks due to its limited involvement in the foreign economy es pecially in the case where a transnational corporation is maintaining sales agents over seas. Trade is used by investors to import items not readily available in the country and export items that are in plenty or not needed. In addition, foreign governments may regulate trade by enacting laws, policies, and import duties. Licensing of technology and intellectual property are substantial assets with legal rights to artistic or written works, name and government grants owned by domestic and international firms. Lastly, foreign direct investment refers to ownership and active control of productive assets by an investor in a foreign country with the expectation of making profits both in the short run and in the long run.

Doctrine of Precedent Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Doctrine of Precedent - Essay Example But in due course, to cope with the administration of the colony, the English in Australia, simply acquired almost all of the prevailing British law at their discretion and for their easiest convenience, started applying them according to the call of the circumstances in the colony. Thus, common law of Britain which originated in the thirteenth century based unevenly on Roman traditions became the guiding principles of the current legal system of Australia. The Australian legal system founded on the common law has the elements of trial by jury, adversarial system and presumption of innocence. But as the society became civilized and the living conditions changed, many of the existed laws became incapable to meet the challenging situations and requirements of the people. Hence, legislation was required to formulate new statutes or Acts to meet the varying needs of the people. These legislations were enacted to broaden the living style of the people and also to regulate the society as a whole, to bring in equity of law. However, the laws based on the doctrine of precedent or case laws edge over the statutory laws, because of its simplicity in its application facilitating decisions on a case by the jury. The statement that the current Australian legal system exhibits an increasing reliance on statute law must be analyzed in the above context, and in order to verify its sanctity it is necessary to have a clear picture of the law structure of the Australian legal system. (Robin Banks, 2006, Law Australia, Legal Information Access Centre, (Sydney, NSW), http://www.liac.sl.nsw.g ov.au/hot/pdf/aust_leg_syst_60.pdf. viewed on 9th May, 2009) Classification and Sources of Law Law can be classified into two, as public law and private law. Public law is criminal law and is concerned with matters of the State whereas, private law is civil law pertaining to the matters of individuals. Criminal law is used to suppress criminal offences by punishing the accused. Civil law deals with disputes between individuals Australian law is based on the system of common law and its procedures are (i) the adversarial nature of court proceedings, and (ii) the appeal provisions. The sources of the law are statute law and case law, and they are of equal validity. Statute law known as Act is enacted law made by parliament. Case law is the principles of law arrived at by the judges in court decisions. (Victoria Law Foundation, 2009, Law & Our legal systems, Chapter-1, http://www.rurallaw.org.au/handbook/xml/ch01s02.php, viewed on 9th May, 2009) History of Case Law and the guiding Principles According to Baker, 'A precedent is a decision or judgment of a court, which is used as authority for reaching the same decision in subsequent cases.' (Baker J.H., 1979, An Introduction to English Legal History p. 171, Butterworths, London) However, it should be noted that Australia has a federal structure and that it has a parliament for each state and also has one for the Commonwealth. The Federal system of government was established by the Commonwealth of Australia Constitution Act 1900. The colonies became states and the states joined to form a Federation. The Law making power is vested with the Federal government as well as the state governments The doctrine of parliamentary sovereignty demands that nobody can annul a law promulgated by the parliament, whereas, common law can be changed through

Reading Questions Essay Example for Free
Reading Questions Essay He decides that it is a ââ¬Å"false memoryâ⬠and that they did not matter as long as one knew what the memories stood for; he proceeds to smile at the portrait of Big Brother and his legs convulse as the announcement is made that Oceania won the war. Short Answer Questions for Entire Novel 1. During Winstons stay in the Ministry of Love, OBrien asks Winston, How does one man exert his power over another to which Winston replies, By making him suffer. Explain how The Party is able to maintain control and power over its citizens (proles and party members alike) by making them suffer. Cite examples from the text to support your answer. There are several instances in which The Party makes the citizens suffer; for instance, in part three, Winstonââ¬â¢s elbow is smashed as Oââ¬â¢Brien identifies himself as a member of the Ministry of Love. It is at this very moment when Winston comes up with the hypothesis that no one can be a hero if they are physically tortured. There is also the example of the party members doing exercises like toe touches (Winston particularly has trouble actually executing the exercises). In a way, this results in the party members having to be even more obedient (since the telescreen watches everything). The telescreen is what controls everything; if you even think of revolting against The Party, you will be terminated; and not a word would be said about it, yet it intimidated the rest of the population (proles and party members alike) because they wanted to avoid being vanished.

Cloning: A Nusaince or Necessity :: essays research papers
Cloning: A Nuisance or Necessity à à à à à So many miraculous discoveries have been made during the last century. Medical technology has advanced at an unprecedented rate. Now, we are faced with yet another scientific breakthrough. Cloning, in recent years has taken its own shape under the spotlight. However, people are debating whether or not it should be done. I mean, ââ¬Å"Is it morally correct, humane, possible? How will it affect the future of humanity?â⬠There are those who feel that we should step forward and support the idea. Proponents believe that the technology will be used for the good of mankind. Experts say that the technology may be used to help terminally ill patients in a therapeutic way. Others, however, are trying to stop the practice before it has a chance to realize its true potential because they are afraid of future hazards. They think that someone or some country will use the technology to aid them in war. They do not think that it should be accepted because of many of our rel igious beliefs. Opponents of cloning believe the benefits could never outweigh the potentially horrid process. à à à à à People who promote the idea of cloning claim that it will probably be used for very good reasons. Todayââ¬â¢s list of people needing organ transplants because of disease or deformation at birth could be clearly in only a few years. The technology may advance to a point where children born with missing limbs or deformed parts could actually be removed and replaced with a fully functional, completely healthy limb. à à à à à If cloning were ever to reach its full potential, the benefits would be virtually limitless. There would be laboratories where the sole purpose of that lab would be to make replicas of oneââ¬â¢s self, so that if the person ever had anything wrong with their body, it could be fixed by simply going and having a surgery that would give them a replacement. It would have matching DNA and would be 100% compatible with the body. In theory, people could extend their lives for hundreds of years. à à à à à Who can say that cloning is done for the purpose of medicine. Opposers of cloning claim that the technology is not being developed for the safety of humanity, but by the demand of the people. It is for the people out there who believe that it could give them a new start every time they feel like they are old.

The Politics of Minimum Wage Laws :: Minimum Wage Essays
"We cannot legislate prosperity. When we increase minimum wages by legislative fiat, we kill jobs. Government creates nothing but what it has first taken away." -- President Lyndon B. Johnson Many investigations have been made in an attempt to understand how politics is involved in determining the minimum wage rate. These studies indicate that due to the complex American political system, which distributes power to different levels of government, different variables will exert pressures on the various governing bodies in the United States. In other words, these studies indicate that when it comes to minimum wage legislation, decisions on whether to raise the minimum wage, and what the rate should be, have very limited economic bases, and instead rely heavily on political bases. The most important of which is political ideology. While aspects of other variables contain some economic theories, for example unemployment rate and median household income, these variables have a limited impact, and can even be explained through political interpretations in addition to their economic bases. Considering the fact that minimum wage laws greatly impact the economic equilibrium of the entire country, and impact major economic variables such as the wage rates and the profit rate, it is amazing to learn that economic indicators are conspicuously insignificant when it comes to determining the actual minimum wage rate. This may not necessarily be a problem for the current state of the American economy since minimum wage laws affect relatively few people. However, political decisions are unilaterally dictating policy that greatly impact the economic equilibrium of the country, this threatens the integrity of having economic regulations in the first place. The stated purpose for economic regulation ought to fit with public interest theory, which states that regulations are designed to correct inefficient or inequitable market practices. In the case of minimum wage laws in the United States, it seems to fit better with the capture theory which holds that regulations are implemente d in response to public pressure and political purposes. Minimum wage laws will continue to remain a highly debated topic in economic and political circles in the United States. Instead of simply focusing on whether these laws are good or bad for a society, perhaps we should be discussing the rationale for minimum wage legislation. Why do we have minimum wage laws? Do they respopnd to an economic need or only a political need? My research as indicated that political considerations have taken precedence over economic considerations despite the fact that minimum wages have direct effects on the economic equilibrium for the entire country.

Anatony Exam Questions Essay
Chapter 19 Blood Specify the composition and functions of plasma. Plasma is mainly composed of water, electrolytes, and proteins, in particular, globulin and albumin. Its most important functions include the transport of carbon dioxide, oxygen, glucose, amino acids, and lipids, among others. à Describe the recycling system for aged or damaged red blood cells à Old or damaged red blood cells are recycled after certain macrophages called Kupfer cells consume them through phagocytosis. The hemoglobin portion of the red blood is broken down into heme and globin. The globin portion is reused while the heme portion is further degraded into iron, which is also reused. III. Explain the importance of blood typing and the basis for ABO and Rh incompatibilities. Blood typing basically determines the blood type of a person. Performing blood typing is important most especially during transfusion so that doctors would be able to transfuse the appropriate blood type to the patient. It is important to infuse blood with same blood type as the patient to avoid transfusion reactions. On the other hand, ABO and Rh incompatibilities happen when the blood being transfused does not have the same blood type and Rh as the patient. For example, its is ABO incompatible if blood type B is transfused to a patient with blood type A. Likewise, it is Rh incompatible if a patient who is blood type B, Rh positive, or a patient who has the D antigen in his blood, is transfused with a blood that is blood type B, Rh positive, or a patient who lacks the D antigen in his blood. Categorize the various white blood cells on the basis of their structures and functions. Generally, white blood cells are divided into two categories: the granulocytes, which are white blood cells with granules in their cytoplasm and agranulocytes, which are white blood cells without granules. Granulocytes are basically cells with phagocytic capabilities which include neutrophils, eosinophils, monocytes, and basophils. On the other hand, agranuloctyes mainly include the lymphocytes, which are cells responsible for producing antibodies to fight foreign substances and induce immunity. Chapter 22 Lymphatic System and Immunity I Identify the major components of the lymphatic system, and explain their functions The major components of the lymphatic system include, the bone marrow, whichà lymph nodes, spleen, and thymus. Their main functions include the transportation of lipids to the blood, the production of lymphocytes for defense against diseases, and also drains fluid from cells and tissues. List the bodyââ¬â¢s nonspecific defenses and explain the function of each. The bodyââ¬â¢s nonspecific defenses include skin barriers and mucous membranes which block foreign substances from entering, fever, which is a defense against inflammation, and white blood cells such as basophils, neutrophils, macrophages, natural killer cells, and eosinophils, which all kill and attack foreign substances. III. Define specific resistance, and identify the forms and properties of immunity. à Specific resistance means having an immunity to a particular foreign substance or disease. This type of resistance is induced by lymphocytes, such as cytotoxic T-cells, and antibodies. However, immunity can also be acquired through vaccination against a disease. à Chapter 20 Heart Describe the location and general features of the heart. The heart is located in the middle of the thorax, underneath the left breastbone. The features of the heart include the atrium, which are two chambers on the upper part, the ventricles, which two chambers on the lower part, the septum, a muscle in the middle that separates the left and right side of the heart, and valves that regulate blood flow. Trace the flow of blood through the heart, identifying the major blood vessels, chambers, and heart valves à The oxygen-poor blood first enters the heart through two large veins, the superior and inferior vena cava, and fill the right atrium. The tricuspid valve opens and blood fills the right ventricle. After the right ventricle is full, the tricuspid valve closes to prevent the blood from flowing back to the atrium. Next, the pulmonary valve opens allowing the blood flow into the pulmonary artery and to the lungs. The pulmonary valve closes to prevent blood from reentering the right ventricle. The oxygen rich blood from the lungs then enters the pulmonary vein and fills the left atrium. The mitral valve then opens to allow the blood to fill the left ventricle. The mitral valve then closes to prevent blood from reentering the left atrium. Blood then flows through the aorta and to the rest of the body. III.à Describe the events of an action potential in cardiac muscle, and explain the importance of calcium ions to the contractile process The contraction of the heart itself is basically caused by contractions of small cells of the heart, which is triggered by electric impulse called action potential. The cardiac muscle is basically stimulated to by a voltage to contract. During these events inward flow of calcium ions is equal to the outward flow of potassium. Basically, calcium is important because when it is released from the sarcoplasmic reticulum it increases myoplasmic free calcium which it turn causes contraction Describe the vascular supply to the heart. à The vascular supply or the oxygen supply to the heart is basically carried out by one atrium and one ventricle. Explain the events of the cardiac cycle, including atrial and ventricular systole and diastole, and relate the heart sounds to specific events in the cycle. The cardiac cycle basically begins with Diastasis where in the pressure in the aorta is descreasing while the venous pressure is increasing. Once the tricuspid and mitral valves close, the first hear t sound is produced which is known as S1 or first ââ¬Å"lub-dub.â⬠à Next is the atrial contraction wherein the atria transfers blood into the ventricle and increases ventricular pressure. In the ventricular isometric contraction, the aortic and pulmonary valves close, the blood volume is constant and the pressure slightly increases. Here, the second ââ¬Å"lub-dubâ⬠sound or S2 sound is produced. Next is called rapid ejection wherein the aortic valves open and blood flows rapidly from the ventricle into the aorta. Afterwards,à The ejection or flow of blood from the ventricles decreases along with ventricular and aortic pressure. The left ventricle pressure then decreases causing the aortic and pulmonary valves to close and this is called Isometric Relaxation. Finally the blood from the aorta to the peripheral arteries continues to flow while the aortic pressure falls slowly. Chapter 21 Blood vessels and Circulation Distinguish among the types of blood vessels on the basis of their structure and function. The are basically three types of blood vessels: the arteries, veins, and capillaries. The arteries pump blood away from the heart while the veins pump blood towards the heart. On the other hand, capillaries basically connect the arteries and veins and allows exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. à Describe the factors that influence blood pressure and how blood pressure is regulated Blood pressure is basically the measurement pressure applied on the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps blood through the body. The factors that influence blood pressure are the amount of force and blood pumped and the size and versatility of the arteries. However, other factors that also affect blood pressure include temperature, diet, emotional and physical state, posture, and medication. III.à Identify the principal blood vessels and the functional characteristics of the special circulation to the brain, heart, and lungs. The principal blood vessels are the arteries, veins, and capillaries. The types of special circulation include coronary circulation which is the circulation of blood in the blood vessels which deliver blood to and from the heart muscle. In the brain, the arteries that carry blood to the brain are the internal carotids and vertebral arteries. On the other hand, blood is circulated to the lungs to gain oxygen before it is transported throughout the entire body. Discuss the mechanisms and various pressures involved in the movement of fluids between capillaries and interstitial spaces. The fluid here basically flows out ofà a capillary near an atriole and reenters a capillary near a venule. However, the movement of the fluid at any point in the capillary wall is determined by blood pressure and osmotic pressure, which are two opposing forces. Basically the movement of tissue and blood fluids are different because of their osmotic pressure disparity.

Dystopian Societies-1984 vs Fahrenheit 451
Dystopian Visions An imaginative society consisting of oppressive squalor in which all are heavily restricted by the absolute superiority of the ruling party. A society where repression and restrictions seem boundless, while the individual liberty of the citizen seems boundlessly obstructed. A society where mental deprivation and deception is the goal of the guardian; a society where misery and poverty are thrust upon the unsuspectingly loyal citizens; a society where the well- being of the people are of imperceptible acknowledgement, yet its inhabitants have been manipulated into perceiving such as utopian. Contrary to their deceit induced perceptions, these characteristics are quite the opposite of utopian, they are dystopian! Many authors portray their own vision of a dystopia through novels. Two highly intriguing dystopian novels are George Orwellââ¬â¢s, ââ¬Å"1984,â⬠and Ray Bradburyââ¬â¢s, ââ¬Å"Fahrenheit 451. â⬠Their visions were strikingly similar as the themes were both based on totalitarian governments maintaining control through propaganda and mental/social deprivation (mostly corporate and bureaucratic controls, although technological control was utilized). The protagonists find themselves in almost identical situations, for they have become enlightened of the misery, sacrifice, and evil that their society possesses. But they must conceal their knowledge, leaving them trapped, although they could not keep it hidden forever. In both novels came the mental sheltering of the society to thwart contradicting or rebellious thought that would come with the enlightenment of the sacrifices the society was withstanding. This social and mental control would render the majority of society incapable of independent thought, allowing the injustices to proceed. Forced ignorance masked the evil the government had laid upon them and if one were to unveil the ignorance, they had to conceal it with their lives. In both novels, those who could not shield their enlightenment would fall victim to the strong and cunning police forces of the society. These forces would brutally murder and vanquish the existence of those free of the governmentââ¬â¢s mental sanitation. As shown by the ââ¬Å"thought policeâ⬠in ââ¬Å"1984â⬠. This shows the extent to which the extinction of information and individuality was pursued. Another shared characteristic, although much more obvious in ââ¬Å"1984,â⬠is the use of propaganda in manipulating the people. In ââ¬ËFahrenheit 451,â⬠the propaganda came in the form of death. They would publically kill those who disobeyed, just as you see in the end of movie when they murder ââ¬Å"Montagâ⬠. In ââ¬Å"1984,â⬠the society was infested with ââ¬Å"Big Brotherâ⬠propaganda. With posters, ââ¬Å"Two Minutes Hateâ⬠, inflated numbers, and constant reassurance of ââ¬Å"Big Brotherâ⬠being the flawless and great protector of everyone, they deceived the people. I would like to point out the fact that they didnââ¬â¢t share the same figurehead type worship. In ââ¬Å"1984,â⬠everything and everyone was focused and revolved around ââ¬Å"Big Brotherâ⬠, whereas in ââ¬Å"Fahrenheit 451,â⬠there wasnââ¬â¢t as much as the singular idol to worship and direct praise towards. These societies painted by Bradbury and Orwell both utilized mental and social hindrance, through strong regulations. This type of control is otherwise known as the bureaucratic control. In ââ¬Å"Fahrenheit 451â⬠they put heavy restrictions on literature, and would incinerate all books they could locate. In ââ¬Å"1984,â⬠they were absolutely relentless with their regulations, even the wrong facial expression could get you killed. Corporate control was also highly utilized in these societies. Specifically, they would brainwash you as a daily routine called ââ¬Å"Two Minutes Hateâ⬠in the, ââ¬Å"1984,â⬠novel. Here is an example of the Two Minute Hateââ¬â¢s effect on the people, ââ¬Å"a desire to kill, to torture, to smash faces in with a sledge hammer, seemed to flow through the whole group of people like an electric currentâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Orwell14). The government successfully manipulated the inhabitants into loving and feeling completely dependent to ââ¬Å"Big Brotherâ⬠and the government, while completely despising whoever ââ¬Å"Big Brotherâ⬠portrayed as the enemy. Big Brotherâ⬠altered everything to make him seem absolutely flawless and created a false sense of superior and improving living conditions. All of this advertising and false media was not unique to, ââ¬Å"1984,â⬠though. In ââ¬Å"Fahrenheit 451,â⬠the government would use the media to show the deaths of those who broke regulations in place. Technological control was a third control used, as Telescreen monitors were implanted everywhere in ââ¬Å"1984,â⬠to ensure complete surveillance to avoid any risk of conspiracies or deviation from their norms. In ââ¬Å"Fahrenheit 451,â⬠they had robotic dogs that could sniff out and locate any human needed. The protagonists in these novels, Montag and Winston, are both unique to their society for they had the power to unveil the mask of ignorance and be enlightened to the true colors of the society they lived in. They both felt trapped and desperately needed to escape or alter their society. The differences between them and the others are made even more apparent by their wives and how they end up feeling about them. Winston mentally nicknamed his wife, ââ¬Å"the human sound track,â⬠(Orwell66) during their relationship. This being very similar to Montagââ¬â¢s feeling towards his bland and uninteresting wife as well. They both are overwhelmed by the now painfully visible misery and evil their society consists of, but must protect such thoughts with their lives. A significant difference between the two characters is the fact that Guy Montag was successful with his attempt to better society, for his city was destroyed leaving it up to him and some others to rebuild society. This unlike Winston, who was captured, tortured, and then allowed back into society with a new conformist attitude. These novels are criticizing the paths and patterns that human governments tend to take. With governments concealing/censoring information from the people and corruption being so widespread and apparent; these authors are presenting a possible outcome of our chronic blunder. Orwell was even directly criticizing the rule of Stalin in his day and how horrible such a society is and can be. These societies reflect the negatives of our society in a bloated and extreme way and if these relevant evils are not eliminated, our society is at risk of being reduced to a dreaded dystopia.
